EU field view

A linear timeline of EU intralogistics automation. Each milestone is a shift our crews have observed from the warehouse floor. The pattern is consistent: technology accelerates, but the make-or-break remains installation discipline.

EU intralogistics automation, 2014 to today.

Logistics automation in the EU has shifted from a productivity nice-to-have into a baseline expectation for competitive operations. The timeline below tracks the structural moves we have watched from the floor, with a short note on what each shift meant for installation execution.

01
2014AS/RS adoption accelerates in EU DCs
High-bay AS/RS becomes the default for new EU distribution centres. Mast-installed pallet systems start displacing manual rack programmes. Field perspective: levelling and floor flatness become the make-or-break of every install.
02
2016AGV / AMR fleets reach mainstream
First-generation autonomous mobile robots gain traction outside automotive. Floor-marker navigation gives way to SLAM. Field perspective: traffic management commissioning emerges as a discipline of its own.
03
2018Multi-vendor integration becomes the norm
Integrators routinely combine conveyance, sortation and AS/RS from three or four vendors per site. Field perspective: the WMS / WCS handshake becomes the most common defect class at SAT.
04
2020E-commerce peak forces automation acceleration
COVID demand pulls forward years of automation capex. Pocket sortation, robotic pick and tilt-tray sortation move from niche to default. Field perspective: peak-soak testing under design+20% load becomes a contract requirement.
05
2022Lifecycle services overtake one-off installs
Preventive maintenance contracts and 24/7 EU mobilisation become standard for multi-site portfolios. Field perspective: single-vendor coverage replaces the patchwork of regional sub-contractors.
06
2024Brownfield modernisation accelerates
Controls modernisation and capacity expansion inside live operations becomes the dominant project mode. Field perspective: rollback rehearsal beats cut-over engineering as the highest-leverage discipline.
07
2025Unified UI for multi-vendor systems
Major OEMs (Kardex, AutoStore) launch shared operator interfaces across previously-isolated platforms. Field perspective: the screen layer is easy; the sequencing and conveyor tie-ins underneath are where the work is.
08
2026Logistics automation market projected to reach $126.1B by 2029
Industry analysts converge on the projection. The question for most warehouses is no longer whether to automate, it is how often to do it right. Field perspective: install discipline becomes the gating factor for ROI on accelerated capex.
